Ever since the arrival of solid state hard drives they have proven to have an upper hand over the conventional hard drives on all counts. In fact, the only point that counts against them would be the cost factor, which can be easily overlooked considering the other benefits.

First of all, there is the size. Unlike the conventional bulky HDD, the SSD is very compact at 2.5” and 3.5”. This makes them ideal for portable devices such as laptops and notebooks.

Anybody who looks at the ssd vs hdd performance would rate difference in speed as the most useful feature of SSD.  A flash based SSD is a hundred times faster than the HDD, which has to rely on moving mechanical heads, magnetic surfaces, spindles and several more moving parts. HDDs are slow because spinning the disk and aligning the head correctly in position takes some time. Besides, the speed can be affected if there is dust in the mechanical system or if it has had any physical impact.

None of these affect the performance of an SSD. The airtight seal prevents dust particles from entering it and strong jolts do not shake them up, so no data is lost by accidentally dropping it.

Another point to consider in ssd vs hdd performance is the longevity of the hard drive. Traditional HDDs are mechanical, so there will be wear and tear of the moving parts, causing them to crash all on a sudden, losing valuable data. Flash based SSDs on the other hand have inbuilt algorithms that ensure longevity.

Another point in favor of the SSD is its power consumption. It does not need much power because it does not have mechanical parts that feed on electricity. Actually, the power consumption will come only to a fraction of that of an HDD.
